The above is based on the car models, not the Picasso. For the Picasso the switch is protected by a black cover under the glove box. Do this: Remove the 3 plastic rivets under the glove box. Remove the torx screw holding the glove box underpanel to the centre box. Pull sideways on the bottom of the panel and fold downwards.

Result new actuator £950. The garage contacted Citroen because the age and mileage of the car and the problem started just out of warranty. Upshot the nice people at Citroen are replacing the actuator for a large discounted price. Car is now off the road while waiting for a part as the actuator failed while I was on the motorway.
The knock is particularly obvious over speed bumps. My car started developing this intermittent knock from about 2,000 km. The dealership had another demo vehicle which also had the same issue when they tested it. They are currently awaiting advise from citroen Australia for the next course of action as they cannot find the root cause.
